Valley House YAn alternate scheme to Valley House X, Valley House Y is a compound of home, utility building, porch, garden and yard, the simple and rurally-inspired massing establishes a sense of belonging while playing multiple roles in organizing the site. Separate, but linked structures - the main house, covered porch and utility building - form the contained entry court while also framing the space of the large existing cottonwood defining the generous yard area on the east. The road entrance is through a continuous site wall that rises to meet the roof of the utility building. Mixing the honesty of exposed raw timber, steel and rammed earth, the house is tuned to the temperature and light changes across short and long time spans - daily sun movement is tracked through clerestories that cast raking rafter shadows across the main interior axis. Winter chill and summer blaze is controlled through the placement of thermal mass and shade elements on the south and west. |
