2025 AIA Albuquerque Citation Award

Echoing the lifestyle patterns found in German beergardens, Dripline Brewery (named for the area defined by tree canopies) pairs 1300sf of interior guest area with 10,000sf of exterior space for casual, community enjoyment. Offering locally-crafted beer and simple kitchen fare, the environment was conceived to attract all ages, including families with young children, with voluminous gathering spaces, park-like terrain, shady patios, and kid-friendly zones.

Beginning with a pre-engineered building delivery method, we cut a transitional zone between the public-focused Taproom and the craft-oriented Brewery. Slicing a larger whole into the two programmatic parts, this cut joins parking with the main entry, then rotates the guest experience toward the inviting south yard. The site plan deliberately funnels guests from the street and parking into decelerating processionals, leaving the outside behind. Defined by structures and fencing, guests enjoy a protected outdoor atmosphere of nature, relaxation and activities.

Located just north of Albuquerque’s Downtown, the context of the site is part of the language of Dripline’s design. Surrounded by industrial metal shed-like buildings in their most modest and unassuming form, we followed suit using two complimentary pre-engineered metal buildings to shape the indoor and outdoor space. Positioning the interior volumes on the north end of the site allows for year-round outdoor comfort with southern sun exposure. In the beergarden, an orchard of deciduous trees offers shade in the summer and invites warm winter outdoor afternoons.
